Throwback Thursday: Canoe Races at Riverfront Park

Posted By: Unknown - 6:00 AM
The Norristown Project will continue this week's theme of a different subject each day. In honor of Throwback Thursday, we dug up some old photos at Montgomery County O.I.C. on Arch Street from when they sponsored an annual Canoe race in Norristown.

Beginning in the 1970s, Montgomery County Opportunities Industrialization Center hosted an annual canoe race at Riverfront Park here in Norristown. I had the privilege of digging through old photos at the OIC building this week and stumbled upon some great photos. In the earlier days of the OIC, they would hold an annual canoe race for the community. Local banks and businesses would assemble their teams and they would race down the river to Riverfront Park.

These pictures show how much fun our community had in our parks, and I am happy to see some of these traditions come back to our town. Dragon Boat Club joined our community a few years ago and the amount of work they do in the community is amazing. Since they have been in town, a mural has been dedicated, the park has been revitalized, and the park is now becoming Norristown's hidden gem.

So take a trip down memory lane with us and view some of these great photos. Let's see if you can recognize anyone from these pictures!

Going for a swim?

Look at all the boats in the water!

Happy times at Riverfront Park!

This Friday, Dragon Boat Club will host a Family Feud challenge at Casa Bonita beginning at 7pm. Event details are listed on the community calendar
