Ready for Some Fireworks?

Posted By: Unknown - 3:00 AM

Each year, Norristown has a problem with coming up with enough money to fund a fireworks show in town. As money continues to become tight for the municipality, it's time to start thinking of creative ways to raise money for the annual show. Last year, we were lucky to have a donation from Valley Forge Casino. But will we be lucky this year? Or will we even need luck? Now, not June, is the time we should know whether or now we will have a fireworks show.

The message below is a statement from our neighbors in Phoenixville and how they raise money for the fireworks. Simply, their town comes together to raise money for a show. If they want a better fireworks show, they donate more. Businesses join in and it shows the pride they have in a tradition in their community.

"Dear Fellow Members,
Each year Phoenixville puts on a lovely fireworks display made possible by the hard work and dedication of many unsung volunteers. This year will be no different and that's where you come in! We are in need of volunteers to assist in our effort to bring you a wonderful fireworks display for 2014! The following is a list of ways you can help:
Please donate your unwanted shoes to Tammy Klotzbach and the Soroptomist fundraiser for the fireworks. The shoes go to third world countries and the funds raised will help fund the fireworks! Shoe collection bins can be found in all Phoenixville Federal branches. For details, please PM Tammy.
We also need volunteers who will:
• Contact business owners, commercial establishments, industries, any employer (even your own), etc., directly by visiting their establishments with a request for a donation. We will provide a fundraising document if requested.
• Assist at donation tables: At one or both of our First Friday events, one in May and the other in June OR during the Dogwood Festival - M-F 6PM - 10PM & Sat. Noon -10 PM!
• Donate baked goods for the First Friday table.
• Youth groups interested in organizing a car wash to benefit the fireworks fund!
• July 4th, at the fireworks event at Friendship Field, can you share some of your time before the show begins? We need as many volunteers as possible to walk through the crowd with collection jars for donations. People are usually in a good mood and willing to donate! Collections will end prior to the show.
• Do you have another idea? Let me know!
If you would like to volunteer in any capacity, please post in the thread or message me. Together we can make this a fun and memorable 4th of July! "

So it may be too late this year and we may have to cross our fingers again...but for years to come, a committee should be established to help the municipality raise funds for a fireworks show.
