Press Release: MLK Day of Service 2014

Posted By: Unknown - 5:11 PM
For immediate release:

The Norristown Project will host three volunteer events throughout Norristown in celebration of MLK Day of Service weekend. All activities will take place on January 18th, 2014. For a complete list of events and activities, see below:

Location: Montgomery County OIC, 1101 Arch Street, Norristown, PA.
Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 noon

TNP will start our first project with our lead organization, Montco OIC, to kick off a renovation project in the historic building that was once home to Hancock Elementary. The majority of the volunteers will be needed in the basement. We will need assistance with removing broken and old furniture out of the building to a disposal unit. Once this task is complete, individuals will assist with a deep cleaning of the basement and scrubbing the walls. The second project that will take place during this time will be paining the walls of one of the GED classrooms on the second floor. Volunteers who wish to help with the painting should come dressed in clothes they wouldn't mind painting in. The total project will need at least 15 volunteers, however, more would always be accepted. There are plenty other projects available if we finish early!

The overall goal of this project is to help Montgomery County OIC prepare for an expansion of their programs and give The Norristown Project storage space for our supplies. In 2014, the OIC will expand on many programs currently in place while creating more events and classes for the community. The basement will receive a complete makeover in early 2014 to have a more modern look while keeping all historical aspects of the building. We would like to symbolize this exciting time by having volunteers "break ground" on this project.

Location: Selma Mansion, 1301 W. Airy Street, Norristown, PA
Time: 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

TNP will collaborate with Norristown Preservation Society on a cleanup project inside the mansion. The majority of the work will take place in the basement and bedrooms. Volunteers are needed to help with window washing, prepping the walls for painting, and cellar repairs. Weather permitting and depending on time, volunteers may be needed to help with a mulching project outdoors in the garden. Approximately 15-20 volunteers are needed for this project. Lunch will be served!

TNP is thrilled to collaborate with NPS at their headquarters located in Selma Mansion! Their non-profit was formed to save Norristown's history and Selma Mansion is living proof of this! Volunteers that participate in this project will become a part of Norristown's history as this mansion becomes a main focal point of this neighborhood. This is one of several volunteer efforts that will take place at the mansion. NPS hopes that through donations and volunteerism, they will be able to begin opening the mansion to visitors and the community.

Location: Centre Theater, 208 Dekalb Pike, Norristown, PA
Time: 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The final project of the day will be with Centre Theater located on the Arts Hill. We will collaborate with Centre Theater with a reorganization project that will take place as they begin to expand on community activities. Volunteers will help with moving stage props and other items to a new storage location in the building, organizing the new storage space, and cleaning around the theater. Approximately 15-20 volunteers are needed for this project. All activities will take place indoors.

Over the years, Centre Theater has put on many great productions and continues to be very active in the community. TNP is pleased to partner with them in this beautiful building as they prepare for more events happening in 2014. Norristown Arts Hill will celebrate its 5th annual Arts Hill Festival in May 2014.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Volunteers of all ages can participate in any of the three projects above. There is no RSVP needed, however, we would like to know if you would be participating so we can have an idea of how many volunteers may be in attendance. Volunteers can attend one or all three projects if they wish. Also, all three organizations will accept donations to sponsor future projects and programs as well if you wish to make a contribution. Montgomery County OIC, Norristown Preservation Society and Centre Theater are all registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. For questions on any of the upcoming events or to RSVP, email NorristownProject@gmail.com.
